H.R.2813: Asylum Seeker Work Authorization Act of 2019

Overview

Asylum Seeker Work Authorization Act (H.R. 2813) would direct DHS to provide employment authorization for eligible asylum applicants. This authorization would last for one year, with annual renewal during the period necessary to decide the applicant’s asylum claim. Currently, asylum seekers are not entitled to employment authorization, though they may be granted it through the Department of Justice. The bill would also shorten the waiting period for receiving employment authorization to 30 days from the filing of the asylum application.

S. 3048 is the Senate companion bill introduced by Sen. Susan Collins.
