H.R.4029: Tribal Access to Homeless Assistance Act
Overview
The Tribal Access to Homeless Assistance Act of 2019 is bipartisan, bicameral legislation that would enable Native Tribes and tribally designated housing to access funding to combat homelessness on tribal lands. The bill would allow such entities to apply for, receive, and administer grants under the Continuum of Care Program (CoC).
The Senate companion bill is S. 2282.
Talking Points
- The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimates that there are between 42,000 and 85,000 homeless Native Americans.
- By allowing tribs to gain greater access to public grants, these communities can more effectively build their way out of this housing shortage.
