H.R.771: Choices in Education Act of 2019

Overview

The Choices in Education Act (H.R. 771) would distribute Federal funds for elementary and secondary education in the form of vouchers for eligible students. This block-granting of child nutrition funding would move money from public schools to private schools, and in the longterm lead to a decrease in federal spending for the school lunch & breakfast programs.

The bill would also repeal a current rule that requires schools to increase the availability of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free milk in school meals; reduce the levels of sodium, saturated fat, and trans fat in school meals; and meet children’s nutritional needs within their caloric requirements.
