S.1146: Supporting Caregivers Act

The Supporting Caregivers Act is bipartisan legislation that changes National Family Caregiver Support Programs (NFCSP) to better support children, people with disabilities, and older adults who need caregivers. NFCSP awards grants to local service providers, and currently, only 10 percent of funds from these grants can be used to support older relative caregivers. The legislation would raise this amount to 15 percent. Grants given by NFCSP currently flow through Area Agencies on Aging (AAA). S. 1146 would also create an avenue for AAA to request that more than 15 percent of funds be allocated to support older caregivers.

Talking Points

  • The National Assembly supports the Supporting Caregivers Act, as it would make supports and services more accessible to older adults who are caregivers, as well as the people they support.
