S.1338: Beyond the Box for Higher Education Act of 2019

Overview

Beyond the Box for Higher Education Act (S.1338) would change guidelines to encourage institutions of higher education to remove criminal and juvenile justice questions from their admissions applications.

Additionally, the legislation would provide institutions that continue to ask questions regarding juvenile justice history with training that would ensure they align with the purposes outlined in the bill. Training would also be available to ensure that institutions do not use other questions as proxy, training for career counselors on how to serve students who have been through the juvenile justice system, and training for any staff member who would have access to juvenile justice history.

H.R. 2563 is the House companion bill.
