S.3170: Providing Urgent Maternal Protections for Nursing Mothers Act

The PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act (S. 3170) would strengthen federal Break Time Laws for breast pumping. Currently, employers are required to provide reasonable break time and private areas for employees to pump breast milk during the workday. However, these protections do not extend to nearly one in four women (including teachers and some other salaried employees). The bill would also clarify that wages can not be withheld from hourly-employees during any time spent pumping that does not inhibit work. Additionally, this bill would expand the Fair Labor Standards Act so that nursing mothers have access to remedies that are available for other violations.

H.R. 5592 is the House companion bill introduced by Rep. Carolyn Maloney.
